STALKER 2 Weapon Repair: When a Gun Stops Working

Weapons degrade with use and a worn gun misses. How repair cost scales, when to stop shooting, and why carrying a spare is usually wrong.

How condition works

Every shot costs condition. Below a threshold, the weapon starts malfunctioning — jams that cost you a second in the middle of a firefight, and accuracy loss you will notice as “my shots are not landing”. The failure is not gradual enough to warn you. A weapon that felt fine at 60% can cost you an engagement at 40%, which is why the number is worth checking before a fight rather than after.

Repair economics

Repair cost scales with the value of the weapon and with how much condition is missing. Two consequences: Repair early. A weapon repaired regularly costs less overall than one run to near-zero and then fixed, because the missing condition is the multiplier. Do not repair what you will replace. Spending on a gun that a better one will replace in two hours is the same mistake as upgrading a suit you are about to swap — the armour repair page covers the identical logic from the armour side.

Why carrying a spare is usually wrong

The instinct is to carry a second weapon for when the first breaks. In practice a second weapon is heavy, costs condition itself, and the ammunition is not interchangeable. Better: carry a pistol as the emergency option, keep the primary repaired, and accept that if the primary dies mid-fight you disengage rather than fight on. Disengaging is free; a spare rifle is not.

The upgrades that change the maths

Durability upgrades reduce the rate of wear, which is the single best long-term investment on a weapon you intend to keep. That is why the upgrade decision matters more than buying a more expensive gun: a fully upgraded mid-tier weapon that never jams beats a high-tier weapon you cannot afford to maintain.

When to repair

Before a long trip, not during one. Technicians are in settlements, and a settlement is where you plan the next leg. Arriving at a settlement with a weapon at 30% and no money for repair is the situation to avoid — which means the money page is part of the maintenance plan, not separate from it. One practical rule: if a repair costs more than a third of the weapon’s value, consider whether the weapon is worth keeping at all. Sometimes the correct answer is to sell it and use what you loot.
