STALKER 2 Weapons by Role: What to Carry
No single gun wins every STALKER 2 fight. How the classes behave, the community's role picks, and why ammo choice matters more than the rifle.
How the classes actually play
GSC’s own descriptions set the rules:
- Pistols are light and common, useful at close range and as a detector holder, but a poor primary in a real fight.
- SMGs trade range for automatic fire, mobility, and low recoil. Their ammunition disappears fast in sustained fire, so they suit short engagements.
- Assault rifles are the all-round class for mixed mid-range travel. GSC explicitly warns that recoil and hip-fire spread are separate drawbacks — short bursts beat holding the trigger at distance.
- Shotguns are for close spaces, mutants, and the next doorway. Power drops hard at range, and weight makes open ground a poor place to rely on one.
- Sniper rifles are for distance and a prepared firing position: heavy, slow to reload, awkward when a fight moves close.
- Machine guns give sustained fire and a large magazine but are heavy and poor for moving quickly.
Named picks people actually rate
The converged community shortlist (Pixel Twelve / VGSources, reviewed September–October 2026):
| Job | Pick | Why | Tradeoff |
|---|---|---|---|
| All-round AR | Kharod | Balanced accuracy, handling, attachment flexibility | None major |
| Close-range shotgun | Ram-2 | High damage vs mutants and interiors | Useless in open ground |
| Practical long range | SVDM-2 | Accurate, familiar 7.62×54R | Weak when rushed |
| Max-power endgame | Gauss Gun | Huge damage/range/accuracy | Heavy, slow, scarce battery ammo |
| Rapid SMG | Integral-A | Very high fire rate, 9×19 | Small magazine |
| Backup pistol | Rhino | Pistol-slot power, low weight | Small cylinder |
| Light 2.0 SMG | Fora-230 | Mobility over reach | Not for sustained fire |
| Update 2.0 also added four weapons free to all owners: the Arev assault rifle, the GP3A and SKP designated marksman rifles, and the Fora-230 SMG, plus new optics (a 3× scope for Western weapons, a red-dot for Eastern ones). |
Ammo is the real power curve
The fastest way to make a gun feel “top tier” is the right round. Match ammo to the target: AP/penetrating when enemies show armor or you are hitting at mid range where surface hits matter; HP/soft-target for unarmored enemies and faster close-to-mid kills. A weapon firing the wrong ammo feels random; switching rounds often beats switching guns. Carry at least two calibers if your trader economy allows.
Upgrades and repairs
Build your loadout in three arcs: early game, prioritize reliability and a small set of recoil/handling attachments; mid game, add a second weapon with a different strength (a shotgun for pushes, a precision rifle for long angles); late game, build redundancy so one broken gun is never a single point of failure. Read the exact technician effect before spending coupons — and condition degrades faster inside anomaly fields, so strip gear before diving in. See survival basics for the anomaly-detector routine, and the economy page for why repairing before you sell rarely pays off.
