China Ground Tree Order: Mixed Lineup Play

China's tree starts on Soviet hulls and ends on autoloaded 125 mm MBTs. The MBT-2000 fixes the Soviet reverse-speed curse and adds one new weakness

China’s ground tree does not have one national style, and treating it as if it does is the most common research mistake. The lower half runs on Soviet-supplied hulls — ␗SU-76M, ␗T-34 (1943), ␗T-34-85 (S-53), ␗IS-2, ␗ISU-152, ␗ISU-122, ␗SU-100, ␗PT-76 — and the Chinese designations only start appearing at Rank IV with the Type 62 and Type 63 light tanks. The first Chinese medium is the Type 59 at Rank V.

That structure decides how you research it: learn Soviet habits first, then transition. Players who expect “Chinese tactics” from the opening vehicles are playing the wrong nation for their first fifty matches.

Why MBT-2000 is the most interesting tank in the tree

The MBT-2000 (Rank VII, BR 11.7) is worth understanding even if you never buy it, because it shows what the line is trying to do. It descends from the Type 90-IIM, itself developed from an early-series T-72, so it inherits the Soviet trinity: three crew members, an autoloader, and a 125 mm smoothbore.

Then it diverges from that ancestry in three important ways.

1. It fixes the reverse problem. Soviet autoloader tanks are famous for crawling backwards, which is how they die — committed forward with no way to un-commit. The MBT-2000 replaces the Soviet engine with a Ukrainian 6TD-2 producing 1,200 hp, and the War Thunder Wiki notes the result directly: installing that engine significantly improved reverse speed compared to Soviet counterparts. Top speed reaches nearly 70 km/h.

If you have spent the lower tiers learning to never enter a position you cannot leave, the MBT-2000 is the first Chinese vehicle that lets you.

2. It keeps the Soviet ammunition problem. Its protection is excellent — NERA composite plus FY-2 ERA, better than the Soviet ancestor against both kinetic and shaped-charge threats — but ammunition is still stored in the fighting compartment. You are still playing the vulnerability that every Soviet-derived autoloader has: where the crew sits is also where the rounds sit.

3. It adds a weakness the Soviets did not have to think about. Its stated shortcomings include limited gun elevation angles. Combined with a cramped layout, that means hull-down positions are not automatically available to you the way they are in a Western MBT. Pick your ridge before you need it.

Three misjudgements

  1. Expecting the early tree to play Chinese. Ranks I–IV are Soviet vehicles with Soviet handling. Learn those habits; they are not wasted.
  2. Treating the autoloader as purely good. Three crew and ammunition in the fighting compartment mean one good penetration often ends the fight.
  3. Assuming a top-tier Chinese MBT can hull down anywhere. Limited elevation angles are a real constraint on the MBT-2000; check the terrain before committing.

Decision rules

  • Play the imported ranks as Soviet tanks, including the weaknesses.
  • Reach a working Rank V–VI lineup before touching Rank VII; the repair economy does not forgive half-built garages.
  • Pick positions with a reverse route until you are driving something with a non-Soviet engine.
  • For top tier, verify you can actually use your gun depression on the map you are queued into.

Keep additions within one BR step using how BR decides your matches, read the sunk-cost math in the new nation grind framework before starting China, and lock the garage together with lineup BR spread.
