Black Ops 7 Prestige: What Resets and What You Keep

Level 55 unlocks Prestige in Black Ops 7. Exactly what resets, what carries over, and the one Permanent Unlock decision that shapes every future grind.

Prestige in Black Ops 7 is optional, shared across every mode, and built on one global player level. You hit level 55 (Commander), fill the XP bar, and then you choose whether to reset. Nothing happens automatically. The decision matters because entering Prestige wipes most of your unlocks back to zero — but it also hands you a Permanent Unlock Token and a fresh set of cosmetic rewards. This guide separates what you lose from what is safe, and tells you where the single most important choice in the system should go.

If you are mixing this up with the per-weapon track, that is a different system — see the weapon prestige guide for what resets when you prestige a single gun.

How to enter Prestige

Your player level is global: XP from the co-op Campaign, Multiplayer, Zombies, and (since Season 01) Warzone all feed the same bar, from Private I (level 1) to Commander (level 55).

  1. Earn enough XP to complete level 55 and fill its XP bar.
  2. Open Career > Progression > Prestige from the main lobby.
  3. The menu walks you through two preview pages, then a third where you hold a button to commit. That hold is your last chance to back out.

Because it is opt-in, you can stay at max level forever and keep everything unlocked. Prestige only begins when you decide the rewards are worth the reset.

What resets (the cost)

Entering a Prestige sends your account back to level 1 and relocks the following:

  • Player level — back to 1.
  • Every level unlock — weapons, lethal and tactical equipment, perks, wildcards, scorestreaks, and field upgrades all relock behind their original requirements.
  • Custom loadouts — your saved classes reset, so you rebuild weapons from scratch.
  • Combat stats for that Prestige — your K/D and similar stats restart, although your lifetime numbers stay viewable in the Combat Record.

Create-a-Class slots above the base allotment also reset, which is why the first ten levels after a Prestige feel punishing if you leaned on specialized setups. Plan a flexible “Prestige starter class” before you reset.

What you keep (the safety net)

This is the part most players worry about unnecessarily:

  • Weapon progression — attachments, camos, reticles, and mastery challenge progress all persist. A weapon you already maxed is fully usable the moment you re-unlock the base gun.
  • Challenge progress and badges — including Mastery Badges.
  • Operators and emotes — anything you ground or bought stays.
  • Store, Battle Pass, Weekly, and seasonal items — anything you paid for or earned through events is permanent.
  • Zombies GobbleGums — carried over.
  • Anything with a Blueprint or skin — stays permanently unlocked. A gun you own a Blueprint for remains usable even while its base level unlock is relocked, which is the single most useful loop-hole in the system.

Permanent Unlock Tokens — spend them on the right thing

Each Prestige grants one Permanent Unlock Token, ten in total (through Prestige 10). Spend it on any level-unlock item and that item never relocks again, available at level 1 in every future Prestige. You can spend it from the Level Unlocks menu or while browsing items in your Loadouts, any time before you reach Prestige Master.

The strategy that matters: spend on late-requirement Perks, Wildcards, or Field Upgrades — the items that cannot be obtained through the Store or Battle Pass and that take the longest to re-earn. Guns almost always come back through Blueprints anyway, so a token spent on a weapon is usually wasted. Hoarding your first couple of tokens until you are two or three Prestiges deep is a legitimate play if you want maximum flexibility.

Prestige Master and the level 1,000 cap

Finish Prestige 10 and you enter Prestige Master. From here the level cap finally lifts, climbing all the way to level 1,000, and nothing relocks anymore. You get the “Prestige Master” title and an orange level color; at level 100 you can switch to navy blue and start Title Challenges, with additional color options unlocking every 25 levels after that. Seasons have only added to this track rather than changing the rules.

Fastest way through the laps

Double XP tokens shorten every Prestige lap, and Activision has confirmed existing tokens also work in Modern Warfare 4 (where they only count down during matches). Objective modes — Hardpoint, Domination, Control — pay consistent score-per-minute even when you are under-geared early in a Prestige, so they are the efficient grind when your loadout is stripped. The players who climb fastest are the ones who know when to reset, what to permanently unlock, and how to stay effective while under-equipped.

The shared XP system guide covers how that single level bar fills across modes, and the scorestreaks reference lists exactly which streaks relock when you prestige so you can plan your starter class.
