Exotic weapons are gold-tier gear. You earn them from story quests, random world drops, or the Exotic Archive kiosk in the Tower. Some drop from raid or dungeon bosses.
Story quests as the reliable source
Quests give the most reliable Exotics. Story campaigns and seasonal stories hand them out as rewards. Follow the quest marker before you chase random luck.
Random world drops remain the oldest path. They can appear from almost any activity, with better odds during featured weeks. You cannot force them, so play what you enjoy.
The Exotic Archive is your safety net. If you missed an older weapon, the kiosk in the Tower sells it back for resources. Use it when a source has left rotation.
You must own a weapon before its catalyst can drop. This rule trips up many players. Check your Collections tab first if a catalyst never appears in your loot.
Ritual activities and the catalyst tab
Catalysts upgrade an Exotic you already hold. Most drop from ritual activities like Vanguard Ops, Crucible, or Gambit. A few come from a Seasonal Hub Exotic Order.
Raid and dungeon catalysts fall from that activity’s final boss. For example, some weapons tie their catalyst to a specific endgame encounter. Farm the right activity, not random play.
Track missing catalysts in one menu. Open Collections, pick Patterns & Catalysts, then the Exotic Catalysts tab. Each entry lists where its catalyst drops. That beats blind farming.
