Destiny 2 Prismatic Fragments: How to Unlock Them
Prismatic Fragments come from campaign chests, Pale Heart secrets, and Memory Vestiges. Answers to the questions players actually ask.
“Where do I even start?”
Finish the opening mission of The Final Shape campaign. Prismatic unlocks during it, at the Prismatic Conflux.
You cannot collect Fragments before that point. Nothing else in the Pale Heart will drop them.
“Do I have to finish the campaign?”
Not all of it, but most of it. Several Fragments come from chests inside campaign missions, and those missions are not freely replayable until the story is done.
Post-campaign quests and the Lost City adventures unlock more. Treat the campaign as the tutorial, not the checklist.
“Why can I see the chest but not open it?”
Because something in that room is unfinished. Look for a named enemy, nodes to activate, elemental charges to dunk, or a symbol puzzle.
The chest stays locked until that step is complete. On the first try it is never a bug.
Memory Vestiges and duplicate chests
“What are Memory Vestiges?”
They are the confusing part, and the game barely explains them. You collect Light or Darkness vestiges from activities around the Pale Heart.
Once you hold enough, they combine into a named Memory. Check your inventory for it.
Inspect that Memory and it marks a region on your Pale Heart map. Go there, find the marked chest, and the Fragment is inside.
The Memory is consumed when you open the chest.
“I got a duplicate Memory. Does the chest pay again?”
No. A duplicate gives Ghost reputation and nothing else. Each chest pays out once per account.
“I’m missing one. How do I find out which?”
Open your Prismatic subclass screen and read across the Fragment slots. Locked ones are greyed out.
Write the names down, then clear by region instead of by name. Walking one zone completely beats reloading the destination eight times.
The zones to sweep are the Lost City, the Landing, the Blooming, the Impasse, the Divide, the Refraction, the Seclusion, and the Transgression.
Sharing Fragments across characters
“Does my other character get them?”
Fragments are shared account-wide once collected, so all three classes can equip them.
Each character still has to unlock Prismatic itself. The subclass unlock is per character; the Fragments are not.
“Do I need Legendary difficulty?”
No. Normal and Legend give the same unlocks. Legend is a harder fight with better rewards, not a separate progression track.
“Why is one greyed out when I know I have it?”
That is usually capacity, not a missing unlock. Your two equipped Aspects decide how many Fragment slots you get.
Swap an Aspect and the count changes. It trips up nearly everyone the first time.
Before you start hunting
Bring a survivable build. Several of these chests sit behind combat waves with no fireteam to revive you.
Prismatic itself works well for that, once you hold enough Fragments to make it function. The Prismatic guide covers building around Transcendence.
Use a Sparrow and check the ledges. Roughly half the missed chests are above eye level.
Fragments plug into Aspects and mods like every other subclass. The buildcrafting basics guide explains the structure if the menu still looks like noise.
This is a long clean-up, not one session. The endgame grind guide helps you fit it alongside weekly tasks.
