Destiny 2 Xur: Where to Find Him and What to Buy
Xur runs Friday to Tuesday reset, not to Sunday. No map icon, no Exotic Ciphers for sale, and a Xenology quest that voids if you claim it late.
When Xur is actually here
Xur arrives at the Friday daily reset and leaves at the Tuesday weekly reset. Not Sunday — that was the Destiny 1 schedule, and it is still the single most common way people miss him. You get Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday, and whatever part of Tuesday sits before reset.
His stock also sets once per visit and does not change while he is there. So there is no reason to rush on Friday, and no reason to assume a Monday visit will show different rolls.
Why you cannot find him on the map
Xur does not get a Director icon. This is not a bug and it is not something your quest log will fix — the game simply does not mark him. If you have never opened a third-party tracker, you will spend your first Friday flying between social spaces looking for a stall that never appears.
He rotates between a fixed set of spots: the Tower Hangar, a cliff in the EDZ’s Winding Cove, and the giant tree in Watcher’s Grave on Nessus. The Tower is the one most people check first, and the Hangar corner on the far side from the main entrance is where he stands.
What is actually on the table
Four Exotics every visit: one weapon, plus one piece of armor for each of the three classes. That is the whole Exotic inventory — you are not picking from a menu of everything, you are picking from four items.
Alongside them he carries a Fated Exotic Engram, a set of random Legendary weapons, and a full Legendary armor set. The engram is the interesting one: it decrypts into something you do not already own, which makes it the most reliable way to fill a collection gap without gambling on world drops. It is limited to one purchase a week per account.
Currency is Legendary Shards. If you are carrying Strange Coins, you are playing the wrong game — those are Destiny 1.
The Xenology quest, and the trap inside it
The reason to visit Xur is not always the gun. On the second page of his inventory he hands out Xenology, a repeatable weekly quest that pays one Exotic Cipher. Ciphers are what unlock retired Exotics at the Monument to Lost Lights kiosk, which makes this the most consistent cipher source in the game.
The quest asks for 21 points of playlist activity. Vanguard completions tick it slowly; Crucible and Gambit wins count for more, and running with clanmates adds more again. That is the whole optimisation — wins in a fireteam, not solo strike grinding.
The trap: you must finish it and claim the reward before Xur leaves. Claim it the following weekend and the quest will not appear in his inventory again until the week after. Two late claims in a row quietly cost you half a month of ciphers.
What to spend shards on
Buy the Exotic weapon only if it fills a hole you will actually use. Check what your build is missing before you look at the stall, not after — the Fated engram will not let you choose, but the weapon sale is fixed, and a gun for a class you never play is a shard sink.
Armor is a different calculation. Xur’s armor rolls with random stat spreads, so a high-stat piece for your main class is worth more than most weapon purchases. Check the stat total before buying; a low total is not worth the shards regardless of the perk.
If you are still deciding what your build needs, the exotic armor guide and the best exotic weapons roundup are the two pages worth reading before you spend.
