Destiny 2 Currency Farming: Strange Coins, Ciphers, Spoils
How to farm Strange Coins, Vanguard Ciphers, Spoils of Conquest, and Upgrade Modules, and what each one actually buys
Destiny 2 has more currencies than vendors. Each one has a single efficient source. This page covers the ones that gate real progression.
Strange Coins
Strange Coins are Xur’s currency. You can hold 199 at a time, so spend before you cap.
- Crucible wins grant 4 coins. Losses grant 2.
- Xur’s Strange Favor bounty pays 47 coins for the week’s objectives.
- Dares of Eternity no longer drops them.
Xur arrives Friday at reset and leaves at Tuesday reset. His weekend stock includes Exotic Engrams, so keeping coins banked for the weekend matters. Details are on the Xur guide.
Vanguard Ciphers
Vanguard Ciphers come from Vanguard Ops and Nightfall completions. They buy focused legendary weapons at Zavala.
The price is three Vanguard Engrams, three Vanguard Ciphers, and 15,000 Glimmer per weapon. Those rolls drop at a lower tier than activity rewards. Farm ciphers when the Nightfall focus weapon is one you actually want.
Spoils of Conquest
Spoils of Conquest come from raid encounters and Pantheon chests. Each raid clear of the week yields Spoils on top of normal loot, once per character.
They buy raid weapons and armor from the raid spoils vendor, including older sets that left the normal drop pool. If you are chasing a specific raid roll, Spoils turn random luck into a purchase.
Upgrade Modules
Upgrade Modules are spent when infusing gear and at some vendor upgrade menus. Banshee’s bounties and the season pass are the steady sources. Dismantling legendary gear yields materials but not modules directly.
Do not burn modules on low-Power junk. Infuse only gear you will keep for weeks.
Exotic Ciphers
Exotic Ciphers come from Xur’s bounties and season progression. They unlock old exotics at the Monument of Triumph kiosk. Save them for a weapon you will actually use, since the kiosk costs more than just the cipher.
Glimmer and shards
Glimmer comes from everything. Legendary Shards come from dismantling legendary gear. Both cap, so spend down before long play sessions. The Legendary Marks guide covers the Monument economy separately.
