Escape from Tarkov Shotguns: Slugs, Buckshot and Legs

Shotguns are not a budget rifle. What each shell type does, why buckshot aims at legs, and where a shotgun beats a carbine.

Shell type changes the weapon

A shotgun in Tarkov is three or four different weapons depending on what you load. Buckshot spreads pellets, slugs fire one heavy projectile, and specialised shells trade damage for penetration or accuracy. Deciding “I am bringing a shotgun” is meaningless until you decide what is in it.

Buckshot and the leg meta

Buckshot does not penetrate armour well, so shooting a plate carrier is a waste of a shell. What buckshot does extremely well is damage unarmoured limbs, and a target whose legs are destroyed cannot run. That is the logic behind aiming low: you are not trying to kill through armour, you are trying to make the target unable to leave. It is unglamorous and it works, especially against players in heavy kits.

Slugs are a short-range rifle

A slug converts the shotgun into a single-projectile weapon with heavy damage and limited range. It rewards accuracy and punishes the spray instinct. Slugs are the correct load when your shotgun is a backup for close quarters and you may need to reach thirty metres occasionally. They are the wrong load when the plan is clearing a corridor.

Penetration is the real limit

Against armour, most shotgun ammunition struggles. That is the weapon class’s honest weakness, and no amount of technique fixes it. If the enemy is wearing a class of armour your shells cannot defeat, the correct response is to shoot limbs, reposition, or use a different weapon.

Where a shotgun genuinely wins

Inside buildings, in doorways, and at stairwells. A shotgun fired at [three metres](/guides/eft-factory-map-guide/) does not need to aim, and in Tarkov the fights that kill people happen at exactly that distance. It also wins on cost. A cheap shotgun with good shells is a legitimate threat to an expensive kit at close range, which makes it the best value weapon in the early game.

What to pair with it

Something that reaches further than the shotgun does. A carbine, a rifle, or even a pistol with a decent optic covers the range where a shotgun stops working. And bring enough shells. Shotguns empty fast and reload slowly, and the classic shotgun death is standing still with an empty tube.
