Escape from Tarkov Skills: What Levels and What Does Not
Skills rise with use, decay over time, and cap how much you gain per raid. Which ones change a fight and which are a number that moves.
How levelling works
Each skill has a level and gains experience from a specific action. Sprinting raises Endurance, carrying weight raises Strength, taking damage raises Vitality, searching containers raises Search. A per-raid cap limits how much any one skill can gain in a single raid, so a ten-hour session does not produce ten hours of progress. Skills also decay. Play for a week and stop for a month and the numbers drop, which is why the system rewards consistent play over bursts.
The ones that change a fight
Endurance governs stamina pool and regeneration, which decides how far you can sprint and how many times you can reposition. On a large map this is the single most valuable skill in the game. Strength raises carry weight and unlocks movement options. It gates what kit you can bring without a stamina penalty, which is a loadout decision disguised as a stat. Vitality raises health, which converts some deaths into survivals. Covert Movement reduces the noise you make moving, which is the stealth equivalent of armour. Search and Perception speed up looting and spotting. They pay in time and information rather than in fights.
Elite bonuses
At the top of each skill there is an elite effect that is qualitatively different from the gradual gains below it. These are the reason long-term players feel different to fight against, and they are also why chasing them is unrealistic for a casual wipe. Treat elite skills as something that happens to players who play a lot, not as a goal. A player optimising for elite Perception is a player who has already solved every other part of the game.
The practical approach
Ignore the skill screen. Play in a way that trains the skills you want: sprint more if you want Endurance, carry slightly more weight if you want Strength, take the long route if you want endurance and search. The levels arrive as a by-product. Do not build a loadout around a skill you do not have yet. The armor page and weapon page are written for the player you are now, not the one with maxed Strength.
The one exception
If you are chasing a specific quest that requires a skill level, that is the only time to deliberately grind. Otherwise the system is background noise, and the raids you play matter far more than the numbers they produce.
