GTA 6 Download Size: Why No Real Number Exists Yet

Neither store lists a GTA 6 install size. The 676.7GB figure is fake, a sensible range is 120-200GB, and preload opens on November 12.

Storage is the one launch question where the honest answer is a procedure rather than a figure: open the store page yourself and see whether a size field exists. Right now it does not, on either console, for either edition.

The stores are still blank

Checks of the PlayStation Store and the Xbox Store through August, September and early October 2026 found no file size, download size or storage requirement on any of the four listings. Rockstar’s pre-order announcement covers date, price, editions and preload timing and says nothing about size either.

That is normal rather than evasive. Console storefronts usually populate the size field when the build is finalised and preload is being provisioned, which for this game means on or around November 12. Until then, every published gigabyte count belongs to whoever published it.

The 676.7GB screenshot is fake

The number that travelled furthest was never real. It came from a screenshot showing an install requirement of 676.7GB, and it falls apart on two details: it referenced installing on Xbox One, a console the game is not releasing on, and it traced back to a self-described parody account rather than a storefront.

There is a physical sanity check too. No shipping console game has come close to 600GB; the largest current titles sit near 200GB once all their updates are installed. A file size claim is only real if you can load it on store.playstation.com or xbox.com for your own region. A screenshot cannot be reproduced, which is exactly why it should not be believed.

A defensible range

Without an official number, the useful approach is the reference class rather than a prediction. GTA 5’s current-generation release occupies roughly 90 to 105GB. Red Dead Redemption 2 shipped around 100GB and grew with patches. Recent flagship open worlds land between 100 and 150GB.

Against that, estimates cluster in two bands: a floor of roughly 120 to 130GB, and a central expectation of 150 to 200GB. A 300GB figure also circulates with no source behind it. Plan for the top of the range and you will not be caught short; a day-one patch on November 19 sits on top of whatever the base install turns out to be.

Clear space before the twelfth

Work from your console’s usable capacity rather than its marketing number. A base PS5 has roughly 667GB free after system software on its 825GB drive, a Series X around 800GB, and a 512GB Series S closer to 360GB. Series S owners have the tightest margin of anyone buying this game, and an expansion card is a real cost to price in.

Clearing 175 to 250GB of headroom is the safe move, and doing it now rather than on preload day means the download runs in the background. External USB drives cannot run current-generation games, so anything you park on one is parked, not playable — the preload page covers what happens when the install does not appear.

The box does not reduce the download

There is no disc in the physical release. The Rockstar Store states that boxed versions contain a download code, so buying physical means downloading the full game anyway. The reasoning behind that decision, and what it costs you on resale, is on the no-disc page.
