Hunt Showdown Traps: Tripwires, Bear Traps and Value

Traps cost a tool slot and pay in information rather than kills. Which ones actually stop a push and where to place them so they work.

Traps are information, not damage

A trap that kills is rare. A trap that tells you which door the enemy chose is worth a tool slot every match, because it converts a guess into a decision. That framing changes placement. Traps belong where you cannot watch, not where you are already aiming.

Alert tripwires: the noisiest cheap tool

An alert tripwire does almost no damage and makes a great deal of noise, which is exactly the trade you want when you are holding a compound. It does not need to be hidden to work; it needs to be on a route a player will take without looking down. Put them on the inside of a window frame, on the far side of a door you are not covering, and across the top of a staircase. Anywhere the attacker’s eyes are already busy. The weakness is that the noise is symmetrical: it tells the enemy something too. If you are the one pushing, an alert tripwire going off has told the defender where you are.

Concertina tripwires: area denial with a timer

Concertina wire does real damage and slows a player who walks into it, and unlike a bear trap it covers a line rather than a point. That makes it the better tool for blocking a corridor or sealing the gap under a window. The mistake is placing it where you need to move. A wire you cannot cross is a wire you have built between yourself and your own extraction, and Hunt compounds only have a few routes.

Bear traps: the one that actually stops someone

A bear trap holds a player in place and deals damage. Against a solo it is often lethal, against a trio it is a tempo play: someone has to stop shooting to free a teammate, and that pause is the kill window. Place it inside grass near a compound entrance, or on the inside of a door that swings away from you. Not on the obvious path - place it one step off it.

Poison traps

Poison tripwires add a damage-over-time that punishes a player who keeps moving. They are strong against people who are already bleeding and near-useless against anyone carrying antidote, which is common in higher-rank lobbies. Treat them as a third choice rather than a default.

Tool slot maths

Traps compete with your medkit, your knife, your chokes, and your throwing weapons. A solo player usually cannot afford more than one trap. In a trio, one trap each covers a compound properly. The best value for a duo or trio is one alert tripwire per player on separate approaches. Cheap, replaceable, and they answer the only question that matters when you are inside a boss lair: which side are they coming from?
