Craftsmanship and quality tiers

Weapons and armor come in quality tiers, and a high Craftsmanship skill lets you repair gear to a better condition and, with the right perk, craft above the standard ceiling.

  • Martin’s Secret (Craftsmanship) unlocks a fourth quality tier when you craft weapons yourself, above the usual three. The best self-crafted sword in the game needs this perk plus a high blacksmithing skill.
  • Thorough Maintenance and Keen Eye extend gear life and improve repairs.

Repairing vs buying

A trader can repair your gear, and the Craftsmanship perk that grants XP when a trader repairs for you turns upkeep into skill growth. But doing it yourself with a forge and the right perks is cheaper long-term and raises Craftsmanship directly.

Henry’s sword

The Radzig sword is a key quest item and the iconic blade tied to Henry’s father Martin. Forging and keeping it in top condition is a long-term project that rewards investment in Craftsmanship. If you are leaning the blacksmith path, pair Martin’s Secret with Martin’s Heritage (the mutually exclusive main perk covered in the heritage guide), which speeds Crafting XP.

Why it matters

A self-forged, fourth-tier weapon with Razor-Sharp (+10% damage on sharpened gear) outclasses most loot. ## Where to practice Forges and repair stations sit in major towns and some camps; using a trader to repair also grants Craftsmanship XP thanks to a dedicated perk, so paid upkeep doubles as training. The cost scales with condition, which is why keeping gear from fully breaking (via Thorough Maintenance) is cheaper than rescuing ruined plate. Combined with the potion income from Alchemy, a crafting Henry funds and arms himself without the open market.
