Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 Lockpicking: Beating the Cylinder
Lockpicking is a skill check with a physical minigame on top. How the sweet spot works and why your first twenty picks fail.
Two failure modes, not one
A lock in this game resists you in two ways: the minigame itself, and your skill level. Low skill makes the sweet spot small and the pick fragile. Bad technique breaks the pick even when your skill is high. Players who blame the minigame are usually losing to the second problem while thinking it is the first.
Finding the sweet spot
The lock has a point where the pick turns freely, and the indicator marks it. Holding the pick at that point and rotating without losing it is the whole mechanic. The mistake is to chase the indicator while rotating. You want to rotate slowly, keep the pick inside the marker’s tolerance, and let the lock turn rather than forcing it.
Skill changes the tolerance
At low skill, the tolerance is narrow and the pick breaks at the slightest drift. At high skill, the same lock becomes forgiving. This is why a lock that felt impossible on day one opens easily thirty hours later. The practical consequence: do not spend lockpicks on very hard locks early. Train on easy ones, and let the skill come.
Drunk lockpicking
Some perks change how the minigame behaves, and there is a well-known one that makes lockpicking easier while drunk. It sounds like a joke and it works, which makes a bottle of something cheap a legitimate tool for a hard lock.
Picks are consumable
Lockpicks break. Carrying ten is normal, carrying two is optimism. Buy them when you see a trader selling them, because the alternative is walking past a chest you could have opened.
When not to pick
Lockpicking is a crime if the lock belongs to someone. Being seen picking is worse than being seen near the door, so check the surroundings before you start, and stop if footsteps approach. And some locks are not worth it. A chest behind a very hard lock in a village you will leave in ten minutes is a waste of picks and risk.
