Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 Pickpocketing: Timing and Nerve

Pickpocketing is a timed skill check with a visible countdown. What to steal, when to walk away, and how not to get searched.

It is a timer, not a sneak check

Pickpocketing happens in a short window. You choose an item, you commit, and the check resolves against your skill while a countdown runs. Standing behind the target is necessary but not sufficient. That means the skill check and the item choice are both decisions, and choosing a heavy or well-guarded item is harder than choosing a coin purse.

Choose targets by what they carry

Merchants carry money and trade goods. Guards carry weapons and armour you cannot easily sell. Nobles carry valuables and are the most likely to notice. The best targets are people standing still, facing away, and not in a group. A guard on a wall at night is a better mark than a merchant behind a counter with customers.

The cooldown problem

After a successful theft, the same target is not a good mark again immediately. And a failed attempt that the target notices starts a chase that ends with a search and a fine. The rule that keeps you out of jail: one attempt per target, and leave the area if it fails.

Stolen goods are marked

Items you steal are flagged as stolen. Selling them requires a fence or a trader who does not care, and carrying them through a guard search is how a good raid becomes a prison sentence. Plan the sale before the theft. A stolen item you cannot sell is worse than no item.

Training the skill

Pickpocketing improves with use, and low-risk practice exists: crowded markets, drunks, and people sleeping. Practise on targets who will not chase you far. This matters because the skill check at low level is genuinely tight, and failures at low level are the ones that get you caught.

When pickpocketing beats lockpicking

Pickpocketing gets you keys. A key lifted from a sleeping guard opens a door you would otherwise need to force, and forcing a door is louder and more likely to be noticed. That is the real value of the skill: not the coins, but the keys and the information.
