Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 Needs: Hunger, Sleep and Dirt
Three meters that quietly decide fights. What each one costs you and the cheapest way to keep them topped up.
Three meters, three effects
Hunger, energy, and cleanliness all affect your character. None of them kill you directly, which is why players ignore them until a fight goes badly for no visible reason. The effects are cumulative and they show up as reduced combat effectiveness and worse dialogue checks rather than as a health bar.
Hunger
Eating restores the hunger meter and, depending on the food, gives a small bonus. Potatoes and bread are cheap and everywhere; meat from a hunt is free if you can cook it. The failure case is starving through a long quest chain. Food is so cheap that there is no reason to ever be at low hunger, which makes this the easiest meter to manage.
Energy and sleep
Sleep restores energy, and low energy costs you reaction time and combat readiness. Sleeping in a bed you own or rent is better than sleeping rough, which is why buying a bed in each major town pays for itself. Sleep also passes time, which matters for quests with time-of-day conditions.
Cleanliness
Dirt affects how NPCs react to you, which affects dialogue checks and prices. Washing at a trough or a bathhouse fixes it cheaply, and it is the meter players most often forget before an important conversation. Blood on your clothes is a separate problem and a worse one, because guards notice it.
The maintenance routine
Eat when you pass an inn, sleep when you arrive in a town, and wash before talking to anyone important. That routine costs almost nothing and removes three invisible penalties. The one habit that matters most is washing before a speech check, because charisma penalties are silent and the dialogue failure is permanent.
When to ignore them
During long wilderness stretches, hunger needs attention and cleanliness does not. Do not detour into a town to wash when nobody is going to look at you. Prioritise by what is coming next rather than by what is low.
