Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 Travel: Ambushes and Roads

Roads are where the game puts its surprises. How to travel prepared and what to do when an encounter turns hostile.

Travel is content, not transit

Moving between towns in this game generates encounters: travellers who want to trade, people in trouble, and men who want your horse. Treating travel as a loading screen is how you get robbed. The practical consequence is that you should leave town prepared for a fight rather than prepared for a conversation.

What encounters look like

Roadside events range from a merchant with a story to an ambush that starts with an arrow. Some are genuinely helpful, some are traps, and the difference is usually visible if you are paying attention. The warning signs are consistent: too many armed men, a story that does not add up, and a position that blocks your route.

Reading an ambush

If a group is standing on the road ahead in a way that funnels you toward them, assume the worst. Turn around, take a different route, or approach from the flank. The mistake is to keep walking while deciding. Ambushes resolve whether or not you have made up your mind.

Travelling prepared

Weapon drawn or ready, armour on, a healing potion and a couple of food items. That is the minimum for a journey of any length. A horse helps you outrun an ambush, which is often better than winning one.

Fast travel

Fast travel exists and can be interrupted by events. That means it is not a guarantee of safety, and it is not a substitute for being equipped. Travelling at night changes the encounter mix, and not always for the worse: fewer people on the road, and worse visibility for everyone.

When to fight and when to run

Fight if you have armour and a plan. Run if you are outnumbered, unarmoured, or carrying something you cannot replace. The game does not reward pride, and a lost fight can cost a quest chain.
