Guardian Monsters in Wilds: Why You Cannot Capture Them
The Guardian variant monsters in MH Wilds: why they cannot be captured, their wider weakness profiles, and where each one appears.
Guardian monsters are artificial, ancient-ecosystem creatures central to Monster Hunter Wilds’ story, and they behave differently from their natural counterparts in two ways that catch hunters off guard.
The capture rule
Guardian variants cannot be captured. Shock Traps and Pitfall Traps simply do not take — you must fight them to the death and carve. This is the single most common mistake: a hunter wastes a trap, then realizes the monster is a Guardian. If your target is a Guardian, skip the trap and bring extra carving rewards instead. Pack for a long fight as well: the two trap slots you would normally spend are better used on healing, coatings, or ammo. The capture guide covers the normal rules so you know when trapping is even an option.
Wider weakness profiles
Guardians tend to have expanded weakness profiles compared to the natural monster. Examples from the base game:
- Guardian Doshaguma — weak to Dragon, Fire, Ice, and Thunder (the normal Doshaguma is weak only to Fire and Thunder).
- Guardian Fulgur Anjanath — weak to Dragon, Water, and Ice (normal Fulgur Anjanath resists Thunder).
- Guardian Rathalos — weak to Dragon and Thunder.
- Guardian Ebony Odogaron — weak to Water.
- Guardian Arkveld — weak to Dragon, like its natural form, but appears earlier as the Chapter 3 story fight.
So a Dragon weapon is a safe pick against almost every Guardian. The full weakness chart lays out each one.
Where they appear
Guardians show up across the story and in High Rank expeditions. The Guardian Arkveld is the Chapter 3 set-piece; the others (Guardian Doshaguma, Guardian Rathalos, Guardian Fulgur Anjanath, Guardian Ebony Odogaron) become repeatable High Rank hunts. They are not in Low Rank outside the scripted story moments.
Because they cannot be trapped, plan your endgame economy around carves and the tempered investigations that drop Artian parts.
