Space Marine 2 Best Defence Type: Fencing or Block?
Which melee defence type to carry by situation - Fencing for learning, Balanced for damage, Block for the Adrenaline Surge playstyle.
Start with Fencing
If you are learning, playing on Lethal or Absolute, or in a laggy lobby, carry a Fencing weapon. Its perfect-parry window is the longest of the three and it opens from the first frame of the raise, so you can react closer to the incoming hit and it stays forgiving when several enemies swing at once. The only cost is lower raw weapon stats, and on most difficulties that trade is worth it. This is the default recommendation for a reason.
Move to Balanced for damage
Balanced keeps a normal perfect-parry window but adds a startup delay before that window opens, so you must press earlier. If you have already internalised the timing against Majoris enemies, Balanced lets you hit harder and reach farther on a parry stagger (a wider stagger radius) without losing the parry flow entirely. It punishes late inputs, so it is a step up in discipline, not a side grade.
Block is a different playstyle
Block offers no perfect-parry window at all. Instead, a clean block followed by a swing builds the Adrenaline Surge for a heavy area attack that restores armour. It pairs with the Bulwark’s shield and a dedicated melee build, but for almost everyone else it is a niche pick while learning. Skip it until the timing clicks.
Perks change the math
If you are on Vanguard, the Duellist perk adds +50% to perfect parry and block windows, which makes a tight Balanced weapon far more forgiving. Assault and Heavy can take a prestige version at +25%. A wider window is often worth more than a damage perk, because a reliable parry is what keeps your armour — and therefore your health — intact. For the timing detail behind each type, read parry windows by defence type.
