Space Marine 2 Target Priority: What to Kill First

Fights are lost by shooting the wrong thing. A simple order of priority for every engagement in the game.

The order that works

Ranged threats first, then the things that spawn or buff, then the melee chaff. That order holds in almost every fight in the game, and it is the opposite of what panic produces. Panic produces shooting whatever is closest, which is always the chaff, which is always the least dangerous thing on the field.

Why ranged comes first

A ranged enemy damages you from a position you cannot immediately reach, and it does so continuously. Every second it is alive is damage taken. Melee enemies have to travel. That travel time is your window, and spending it on ranged enemies is the correct use.

Spawners and buffers

Anything that creates more enemies or makes existing ones stronger outranks everything except an immediate ranged threat. A spawner left alone turns a manageable fight into an endless one. The exception is an empowered group whose buffer is out of reach. Then the group itself becomes the target.

Crowd control threats

Enemies that stagger, stun, or grab you are priority targets even when they are not the biggest. Being stunned in a swarm is how a full-health player dies in three seconds.

The armour problem

Armoured elites take time to kill and cannot be ignored, but they are usually slower and less disruptive than ranged threats. Damage them when the pressure eases, and commit when the chaff is cleared. Trying to kill an elite while a swarm is alive is how both survive.

Executions as a resource

Executions restore contested health, which makes the lowest-priority enemy the highest-value one at a specific moment: when you need health. Killing a trivial enemy to heal is a legitimate priorities change.

Re-prioritise when the field changes

Priority is not a static list. A new wave arriving, a ranged enemy taking high ground, or a teammate going down all reset it. The players who survive are the ones who re-read the field every few seconds rather than executing an opening plan until it fails.
