Space Marine 2 Contested Health Explained
What the pale portion of your health bar means in Space Marine 2, how to recover contested health by fighting back, and the Patch 12.0 changes.
What contested health is
Contested health is recent damage that has not yet “set.” While it is still visible you can claw some of it back by dealing damage during a short window. It is not ordinary missing health — executions and Stimms treat it differently — and it is the reason a bad fight can sometimes be walked back instead of lost.
How to recover it
You recover contested health by dealing damage before the window closes. The exact amount depends on the attack, weapon and any active effect: a heavy hit, a fast multi-hit melee chain, a ranged blast, or a class perk can all behave differently. Avoid the advice that says every weapon heals the same amount — it does not. The practical rule is simple: hit back fast, but do not chase it through unsafe attacks. Backing off to be safe throws the contested portion away.
Patch 12.0 made it more forgiving
Two changes in Patch 12.0 specifically helped contested-health recovery. First, contested health no longer fades during grab animations, so a Lictor grab no longer silently steals your recovery window. Second, multi-hit melee attacks now restore contested health on each connecting strike instead of only the first, which makes quick follow-up flurries far more valuable when you have a safe opening.
The risk is tunnel vision
The danger with contested health is over-committing to recover it. If you chase a Gun Strike or a finisher while a Majoris enemy or a crowd attack is already coming, you can lose more health than you recover. Use this priority under pressure: parry or dodge the next incoming hit, take a safe execution if it restores armour without trapping you, deal damage quickly if contested health is still visible, then Stimm before another down becomes likely. For the armour side of the same loop, read armour segments and regen and executions as your armour refill. The Mortal Wound page explains what happens if health hits zero.
