Stalker 2 Hunger: What to Eat and When It Matters
Hunger is a slow tax, not a threat. Which food is worth carrying and how to keep the meter off your mind.
A meter that punishes neglect
Hunger depletes over time and affects your character when it runs low. It does not kill you quickly, which is why it is the meter players forget until they are deep in the Zone with no food. The cost of forgetting is a slow degradation of effectiveness that shows up at the worst moment.
Food types and the trade
Food restores hunger and varies in weight, price, and any secondary effect. Canned goods are heavy and filling; smaller items are light and barely worth the slot. The practical approach is to carry a few filling items rather than a stack of snacks, because the constraint is inventory weight and slots.
Where food comes from
Looting, traders, and the Zone’s settlements. Food is cheap enough that running out is a planning failure rather than an economic one. That makes stocking up at every settlement the obvious habit, and it costs almost nothing.
Radiation and food
Some food is contaminated and some is not, and the difference matters in a game where radiation is a resource cost. Eating something irradiated to fix hunger is trading one meter for another.
Hunger and long expeditions
The longer the trip away from a settlement, the more food you need. A short trip needs one meal; a multi-map expedition needs a stack. The other side of that: food is weight, and weight limits loot. Carrying four meals you will not eat is four slots of nothing.
When hunger genuinely matters
On high difficulty, where the penalties are sharper, and during long expeditions where you cannot resupply. Those are the cases to plan for; the rest of the time, eat when you remember.
Cooking beats carrying raw food
Cooking at a camp fire improves what food gives you and costs nothing but time. A stack of raw ingredients cooked before a long trip is worth more than the same stack carried raw, and it weighs the same either way. The only cost is remembering to do it while you are near a fire.
