STALKER 2 Dog Packs: The Fight You Should Not Take

Blind dogs are weak individually and lethal in numbers. Why open ground loses, and how terrain turns a pack into a queue.

How a pack wins

Individually a dog dies to a burst. In a pack they circle, and the one behind you is the one that costs health. Fighting them in the open means tracking a target that arrives from every direction, which no player can do. They also make noise that draws other things, so a pack fight is rarely just a pack fight.

The terrain answer

Fight them with your back to something. A wall, a ridge, a truck — anything that removes one approach direction turns a circle into an arc you can cover. Better still, fight them in a corridor or doorway where they arrive one at a time. That converts a pack of eight into eight individual fights, which is a fight you win. The rule is the same one that applies to every mutant encounter in the game: terrain first, weapon second. The combat tips page covers the general version.

Weapon choice

Wide damage over precision. A shotgun or anything with spread clears an approach, while a scoped rifle kills one dog and leaves the angle open. Ammunition is the real constraint: dogs are not worth rifle rounds. If you are burning expensive ammunition on a pack, you are paying for a fight you could have avoided.

When to avoid entirely

A pack in the open, between you and your destination, with no cover on the route. The correct decision is to go around. Dogs drop almost nothing worth the ammunition and the health, and the mutant loot page explains why chasing them for parts rarely pays. That judgment — is this fight worth what it costs — is the single most valuable habit in the Zone, and it is why the mutants page is worth reading before you meet the ones that are actually dangerous.
