STALKER 2 Stealth: It Works on People, Not Mutants

Crouching, cover and light discipline let you skip human fights. Against mutants it barely works at all, and knowing the difference saves ammunition.

Against humans

Human enemies detect by sight and by sound. That gives you levers. Crouch and use cover. Being low behind terrain breaks detection, and it is the single most effective thing you can do. Turn the flashlight off. In darkness it makes you visible at a distance that has nothing to do with your gun. Move slowly. Running is loud, and sound carries through buildings in a way that makes sprinting indoors a decision to be found. Break line of sight rather than distance. A human enemy loses track when you are not visible; walking behind a building works better than sprinting across open ground, which keeps you in view.

Against mutants

Mutants are the exception. Most of them close distance and track by sound or scent rather than by careful sight, so the human playbook does not apply: crouching in grass does not stop a Bloodsucker that already knows roughly where you are. What works instead is terrain that physically blocks them, a doorway they have to come through one at a time, and enough damage to kill before they reach you. That is a combat problem, not a stealth one — the mutants page covers each type’s approach, and the Bloodsucker counter is the specific case players hit first.

The practical approach

Scout first, decide second. If a location is held by humans, you can often bypass it or pick them off from an angle they are not covering. If it is held by mutants, the options are fight or go around, and “sneak past” is usually not one of them. That judgment is what saves ammunition, and ammunition is the real currency in the Zone. The combat tips page covers how to win the fight when you decide to take it.

Where stealth pays most

Approaching a settlement or a camp — humans, so it works. Crossing an open region — light and noise discipline reduce how often you are noticed at all, which reduces the number of fights you have to survive. Looting a contested building — arriving unheard means leaving with the loot. Where it does not pay: anywhere with a scripted encounter, and anywhere with mutants. Recognising those two cases quickly is most of the skill.
