USA Ground Tree Research Order: A Practical Framework

Balance light, medium, heavy, TD, and AA unlocks in a USA ground research plan so repair costs never outpace your Silver Lions.

War Thunder shows you the entire USA ground tree at once, and the default instinct is to research whatever vehicle has the lowest research point price. That produces a garage full of hulls at battle ratings you cannot afford to lose, and a wallet that bleeds Silver Lions every match. A deliberate research order fixes this: it keeps your lineup inside one BR band, spreads vehicle roles, and protects the economy while the tree opens.

The four-phase order — with the actual vehicles

PhaseBranch to openVehicles you research, in rough orderWhat it gives you
1Light tank lineM2A4 → M3 Stuart → M5A1 Stuart → M24 ChaffeeCheap repairs, map knowledge, spotting practice
2Medium tank lineM4A1 Sherman → M4A2 Sherman → M4A3E8 ShermanThe flexible backbone of every USA lineup
3Heavy or tank destroyerM10 GMC → M18 Hellcat → M36 Jackson, or M6A1 → M26 Pershing for the heavy routeA second playstyle at the same battle rating
4AA branch (optional, later)M42 Duster → M163 VADS → M247 Sergeant YorkAn answer to aircraft once you hold a stable BR band

Phase 1 exists because light vehicles die cheaply. Every map lesson, flank route, and ambush point you learn in a light tank transfers to every heavier vehicle you unlock later, and the repair bill for learning stays small. The M24 Chaffee at the end of the line is the payoff — it keeps the scouting habit useful well past the battle rating where the earlier Stuarts stop competing.

Phase 2 is the priority, and the Shermans are why the USA tree is recommended to beginners despite weak armor. Their stabilized guns and good gun depression suit hull-down work: peek, shoot, hide. Weak frontal armor means they lose any straight trade, so this phase also teaches you to stop taking straight trades.

Phase 3 adds the second playstyle. The M18 Hellcat is extreme speed with no armor — it only works as a flank and ambush vehicle. The M36 Jackson carries a 90 mm gun on a tall hull, which makes it a long-range sniper that wants hill cover, not a brawler. A tank destroyer or heavy at the same BR as your mediums gives you options when the map, the spawn, or the enemy composition does not suit a medium. Do not research this branch two BR steps above your mediums; an expensive hull dragged into uptiers is the fastest way to lose money.

Phase 4 comes last and only if you feel aircraft pressure. AA vehicles research slowly, earn differently, and play nothing like tanks.

The three vehicles worth learning properly

War Thunder’s official forum guide to US ground forces boils the tree down to three vehicles, and the tactics column is the real lesson — each gun wants a completely different fight:

VehicleStrengthWeaknessHow it must be played
Sherman seriesStabilized guns, good gun depressionWeak frontal armorHull-down, peek-shoot-hide
M18 HellcatExtreme speedNo armor at allFlank and ambush kills
M36 JacksonPowerful 90 mm gunTall profileLong-range sniping from hill cover

The forum guide’s framing rule is worth repeating because it explains US losses more than any stat: never face enemies head-on — always flank. A Sherman fought head-on is a Sherman lost; the same hull fired from a ridge line wins exchanges it has no business winning. If you find yourself trading shots frontally, you have picked the wrong vehicle for how you are playing it.

The BR-band rule

Every vehicle you research should sit within about one BR step of the vehicles you already play. If your mediums are at 4.0 and a heavy tempts you at 5.7, it will spend half its matches one full BR above everything else in your garage. Read how BR decides your matches and what an uptier costs you before you commit research points.

Economy guardrails

Repair costs scale with BR and vehicle price, so the order above doubles as a budget rule. Track which vehicle in your lineup loses money even when you win, and drop it before buying anything new. Why repair costs exist and how to build the lineup around this order cover the money side in detail.
