ARC Raiders Large ARC: When a Machine Is an Event
Bastions, Harvesters and Matriarchs are not patrols. What makes them worth attacking, what they cost, and why the decision is a squad decision.
The three that matter
Bastions are the tank-class machines that spawn in open areas on every map. They hit hard, they soak damage, and they drop among the best loot in the game. The mistake is attacking one because it is there — a Bastion is only worth it if your squad has the ammunition and the angle. The Harvester is an event machine, and the danger is not the Harvester. It arrives heavily guarded, which means the fight is against the guard detail first and the objective second. The Matriarch appears as a world event too, and the mechanic is the same shape: the machine is one problem, and its escort is the other. Both are documented as map conditions rather than as fixed spawns, so they are not something you can plan a route around — see the conditions page.
What the fight actually is
Three things, in this order. The escort. Everything around the big machine kills you while you are focused on it. Clearing the guard detail is the first phase, and it is the phase teams skip. The angle. Large ARC machines punish players standing in the open trading shots. Cover, repositioning, and firing from positions the machine is not facing is the whole technique — the Bastion counter page covers the specifics. The ammunition. This is where heavy ammunition stops being optional. A squad carrying light weapons can fight a Bastion for a long time and lose, because the damage is not penetrating.
The squad decision
A large machine takes two players minimum, and realistically three with one dedicated to the escort. Solo, the correct answer is almost always to leave it alone — the loot is not worth a kit you cannot recover. The other half of the decision is timing. A fight against a large machine is loud, long, and immobile. Every player on the map now knows where you are, and the reward for winning is arriving at the extraction with a full bag and a squad that has been fighting for ten minutes.
When it is worth it
When the raid is going well: full squad, ammunition to spare, and enough time left to leave. That is a narrower window than it sounds, which is why experienced players treat large ARC as an opportunistic target rather than a plan. The threat ladder covers the smaller machines and which ones to walk away from; the economics of the payoff are in the loot priority page.
