Black Ops 7 Ballistic Knife: How to Unlock and Use It

The Ballistic Knife returns in Black Ops 7 as a Melee / Melee-launcher — a close-combat weapon that can also fire a blade across the map. It is one of the highest-skill, highest-meme-potential weapons in the game, and it is genuinely useful once you understand that it is a slow, high-impact pistol rather than a pocket SMG.

How to Unlock the Ballistic Knife

The Ballistic Knife arrived with Season 1 as the Week 1 Weekly Challenge reward. To earn it, complete six total weekly challenges. The key detail is that these can be completed across any mix of modes — Multiplayer, Zombies, Co-op Campaign, or Warzone — so you can do four in Multiplayer and two in Zombies, or grind all six in whichever mode you actually enjoy. Unclaimed Week 1 rewards remain available until the season ends, so missing the first week does not lock you out.

You can also get it instantly by purchasing the Tracer Pack: Catatonia bundle from the Store, though completing the challenges is free and reasonably quick. Unlocking it in Black Ops 7 also makes it available in Warzone, since progress is shared across modes.

How to Equip It

The Ballistic Knife goes in the dedicated Melee slot of a loadout, replacing your Knife or Flatline MK.II. Bring it out in a match by holding your melee button, then press the swap weapon button to return to your last-used weapon. That equip-and-swap flow is worth practicing, because it is how you use the knife as a finisher rather than a primary.

How the Blade Works

The fired blade is a projectile, not hitscan. It has travel time and an arc, so you need to lead moving targets — aim slightly ahead of a sprinting enemy and a touch higher than feels natural at distance. This is the single biggest adjustment for players used to hitscan secondaries, and it is why spamming shots fails: you miss, and you have given away your position for nothing.

Thrown blades can be picked back up, which means the weapon effectively has infinite ammo if you pay attention to where your blades land. Running the Scavenger perk makes this much more comfortable, since you are not hunting for a single blade in a patch of grass while under fire.

Where It Actually Shines

  • Finishing damaged enemies. Swap to the knife when you know a target is one hit from dying; the quick melee is faster than reloading.
  • Silent flanks. A blade kill does not light up the minimap the way a gunfight does, which makes it strong for slipping behind a sniper nest or clearing a side lane.
  • Zombies support. Once Pack-a-Punched, the upgraded blades work as remote revive shots — you can put a downed teammate back on their feet from across the room instead of diving into the horde. If you usually end up playing medic, this is the strongest reason to bring it.

Leveling and Camos

The Ballistic Knife does not support attachments, but you can level it to 30 and then take it into Weapon Prestige for universal Prestige Camos: Stinger at Prestige 1, Barbed at Prestige 2, and Elegant at Prestige Max. If you are working through camo challenges, our BO7 weapon prestige guide covers how the prestige track works.

Common Mistakes

  • Spamming blades like a fast-firing pistol instead of waiting for a clean line.
  • Treating the projectile as hitscan and missing every moving target.
  • Forgetting to pick blades back up, then running dry.
  • Forcing knife fights in open lanes instead of playing tight routes and cover.
  • Quitting matches early during the unlock grind, since many challenges only count in completed games.

If you are building around it, pair it with a primary that covers mid-range so you are not forced to take knife duels across open ground. For the meta side of loadout building, see our best weapons guide.
