Destiny 2 The Final Shape: What It Is & Where to Start

A plain rundown of Destiny 2: The Final Shape — the campaign, Prismatic, the Pale Heart, and the order to play it as a new or returning Guardian.

The Final Shape is the expansion that closed Destiny 2’s original Light and Darkness saga. The story pushes into the Pale Heart, a mysterious space tied to the Traveler. Everything in the expansion builds toward a confrontation with the Witness. If you are new or returning, the important thing to know is that this is not a side story. It is the end of a decade of setup, and it assumes you have met the Witness before.

What the campaign is like

You play as a Guardian following the conflict into the Pale Heart. The campaign runs you through a mix of story missions and set-piece fights across a new destination. The tone is heavier than earlier chapters, and the missions lean on the game’s strongest set pieces. The finale deliberately hands the final confrontation to the endgame. The campaign sets up the fight; the raid finishes it.

Difficulty options exist for the campaign, so you can tune the challenge. New players should start on the easier setting and focus on the story. Veterans chasing the legendary version will want a full build first.

Prismatic and the Pale Heart

The Final Shape introduced Prismatic, the subclass that mixes Light and Darkness abilities into one kit. It has its own super, its own grenade, and a customization system built from aspects and fragments drawn from both sides. Unlocking and tuning Prismatic is one of the first things to do after the campaign, because it changes how every class plays. Our Prismatic guide covers the setup in order.

The Pale Heart is the new destination where much of the expansion takes place. Public events, patrols, and seasonal activity hooks all live there, and it is a good place to farm gear while you learn the space.

What to do after the campaign

The endgame flow is the same as every expansion. Finish the campaign, raise your power level through pinnacle and powerful sources, then move into the raid and the exotic mission. Salvation’s Edge is the raid that continues the Witness story, and the Excision is the expansion’s exotic mission with a unique boss fight. Our raids guide explains how to get into a group.

If you are deciding what to buy or where the expansion sits in the full story, start with the campaign order list. It lays out every chapter in sequence. Returning after a break? Start with the returning player 2026 checklist instead.
