Destiny 2 Witch Queen Campaign: How to Start and Finish

Legendary is where the rewards are, but the Lucent Hive ghosts are why it is hard. The revive mechanic, both difficulties, and what it unlocks.

Why this campaign still matters

The Witch Queen is the expansion set in Savathûn’s Throne World, against Hive who have been given the Light. It is old content now, but it remains one of the most useful things a new or returning player can do, for a structural reason: it teaches the Lucent Hive revive mechanic that shows up again in raids, Nightfalls and seasonal content.

Skip it and you eventually meet that mechanic for the first time in a Grandmaster, which is a bad place to learn it.

The ghost is the whole fight

Lucent Hive Lightbearers do not stay dead. Kill one and its Ghost appears and starts reviving it, and if you ignore the Ghost you are fighting the same Knight on a loop while its friends close in.

So the kill order is: drop the Lightbearer, then immediately find and kill the Ghost. Not after you clear the room — the Ghost starts the revive in seconds. If you have ever watched a boss fight stall because one add kept coming back, this is why.

The three Lightbearer types mirror the Guardian classes: a Knight with a Titan-like shield, a Wizard with Warlock-style abilities, and an Acolyte that behaves like a Hunter. That symmetry is a useful read — you already know roughly what each will do.

Standard or Legendary

Two difficulties, and the choice is not cosmetic. Standard scales to you, so you can play it at any Power and follow the story without friction. Legendary is fixed higher, enemies hit harder, and it does not scale down to meet you.

Legendary pays a full set of high-Power gear on completion plus a cosmetic reward, which is why the community recommends it to anyone who can clear it. But the honest advice is: run Standard first if you are new, because the mission mechanics are what kill you, not the Power gap. Learning the Ghost timing on Standard costs nothing. Learning it on Legendary costs a checkpoint.

What it unlocks

Finishing the campaign opens the Throne World as a destination, and it unlocks the crafting system through the Enclave — the reason to care even in later seasons, since weapon crafting stays relevant long after the story does. It also gates the raid and the seasonal activity attached to that expansion.

The expansion’s Exotic submachine gun comes out of the campaign chain and its crafting pattern, not from a random drop, so completing the story is not optional if you want it.

Where people get stuck

The two common walls are the Ghost mechanic and the boss rooms with vertical space. In the vertical rooms, players die to falls and to adds shooting from ledges while they focus the boss. Clear the high ground, then commit.

The other wall is power. If you are dying in one burst, you are under-levelled for Legendary, not bad — check where you sit on the Power progression track before you blame your aim.

If you are choosing what to play next, the beginner route covers what order to do things in, and the subclass primer covers which kit makes the Lightbearer fights easiest.
