Tarkov Prestige Reset: The Voluntary Way to Start Over

Besides the seasonal character, Tarkov offers a voluntary Prestige reset that trades your character for account-wide rewards. When that trade is worth it.

A Prestige reset is the one voluntary way to start a Tarkov character over, and it is easy to confuse with the seasonal system because both involve “starting fresh.” They are different mechanics with different costs.

What Prestige does

A Prestige reset trades your character’s accumulated level, stash, hideout progress, and trader standings for a fresh start plus account-wide rewards that persist across every character you create. Unlike a season, which runs on a separate character and leaves your main intact, a Prestige reset acts on the character you actually play. You choose to do it; the game does not force it.

How it differs from a season

A Seasonal Character is an opt-in, separate profile that resets every four to six months on its own clock, with its own insurance and economy rules. A Prestige reset is a voluntary decision you make on your own character in exchange for lasting account-wide benefits. The seasonal character page and the no-more-wipe page explain why your main otherwise persists forever.

When it makes sense

Prestige is for the moment when your current character has little left to chase and the account-wide rewards outweigh another grind. If you are still working toward trader unlocks, the Kappa container, or a stable economy, finishing those first is almost always better. Because a Prestige reset is account-wide, the rewards you earn persist past the reset and across characters, unlike seasonal rewards which are tied to a single seasonal run. Typically your stash resets with the character as well, so treat it as a true fresh start rather than a side mode. Because the rewards are account-wide, a well-timed Prestige can leave your other characters better equipped even as the reset character begins from zero.

Prestige exists in two versions now

Update 1.2.0.0 extended Prestige to the PvE zone with six levels, so “should I prestige” is no longer one question. The PvE variant resets only that PvE profile, never touches Arena progression, and can retain part of your skills and weapon mastery up to fifty percent depending on level, with rewards that stay permanently even across a wipe. Our PvE Prestige page covers those rules in full; the mechanics described here apply to the PvP variant. The three-profiles page shows where a Prestige reset sits next to your permanent and seasonal options, and the Kord Breach overview covers the seasonal alternative.
