Escape from Tarkov Quest Guide: Tasks Are Your Progression
Tasks are the only reliable XP and the gate on trader levels. The three requirements that stall players, and why found-in-raid matters so much.
Why tasks are the spine
Trader loyalty levels gate almost everything you want to buy — ammunition, armour, medical items, weapon mods. Those levels rise from spending money with the trader and from completing their tasks. So a player who ignores tasks hits a wall where every decent item is locked behind a level they cannot reach. That wall is the reason experienced players run tasks they do not enjoy. It is not completionism; it is access.
The three requirements that stall people
Item turn-ins. You need specific items, and they are not always for sale. Buying is often possible, but expensive, and the price of a task item is set by everybody else doing the same task. Found-in-raid requirements. Some items only count if they were found during a raid, which means you cannot buy them at all. That single word turns a shopping trip into a raid objective, and it is the most common reason a task sits unfinished for weeks. The quest items page covers what this does and does not apply to. Kill and location conditions. Kill a specific type at a specific place, or mark a location. These are the ones that require a plan rather than a shopping list — and the plan is usually “go to that place, early, before anyone else”.
How to run tasks efficiently
Stack them. Pick the tasks that share a map and a direction, and do them in one raid. Three tasks on the same map is one deployment; three tasks on three maps is three deployments and three times the risk. Read the conditions twice. Half of failed tasks fail on a condition — the wrong location, the wrong weapon, a kill that did not count because the target was not the right type. Do the found-in-raid ones on Scav runs when possible. Free entry, no gear risk, and the item only has to leave the map with you.
The experience question
Task completion is a large share of your XP, and XP is your PMC level, which gates trader levels and unlocks. So tasks and progression are the same system viewed twice. That is why “how do I level fast in Tarkov” has a boring answer: complete tasks, do not die. Everything else is details. The trader levelling page covers the loyalty math, and the first 72 hours page covers the order to do them in.
