Hunt 2.9 Blood Testament: Blood Moon and Burgess

Update 2.9 launched Blood Testament - a community Blood Moon, the Burgess shotgun, and hidden extractions and scout towers. The full event frame.

The Blood Moon time of day

Blood Testament introduced a dynamic Blood Moon time of night that shifts between two phases during a mission:

  • Intense Blood Moon — a storm builds, the moon breaks through, monsters grow more aggressive and attack faster.
  • Dark Blood Moon — clouds cover the moon, visibility drops, and monster behavior returns to normal. Both bathe the map in red. This is a rotating environmental layer, not a one-time map, and it changes how aggressively you can push PvE during a mission.

The new weapon: Burgess

The headline addition is the Burgess shotgun — a foldable, slide-action long-barrel with a 6-round tube, plus Bayonet and Trauma variants. During Blood Testament it unlocks through the Battle Pass and stays through Prestige; afterward it enters normal weapon progression. So the event is early access, not permanent exclusivity.

The permanent change: hidden information

The part of 2.9 that outlives the event is the hidden-information overhaul: all Supply Points, Scout Towers, and Extraction Points are hidden by default, clues reveal two extractions, Scouting Maps spread to all supply points, and the Spyglass radius grew to 75m. This is the change that made most existing route guides obsolete, and it is why we built a whole set of pages around it.

Balance context

2.9 also moved the meta: the Hunting Bow was nerfed, LeMat gained High Velocity ammo, Terminus was buffed, and slug ammo got cheaper. If you are returning from before 2.9, your old loadout math is stale.

Why the event matters for new players

Blood Testament is a good entry point because the event content is self-contained, but do not let it distract you from learning the permanent hidden-info rules — those are what will still be true after the event ends, and they are what the old-guides page warns about.
