What the patch confirmed

Per the official 2.9 patch notes, the Burgess is a foldable, slide-action, long-barrel shotgun with a Weapon Capacity of Size 3 at the cost of long equip and unequip animations. It carries a 6-round magazine. Three forms exist:

  • Burgess — base form.
  • Burgess Bayonet — adds a blade for stronger melee utility, but with an even longer deploy/stow time.
  • Burgess Trauma — reinforced stock that turns the heavy melee attack into a hammer strike, giving an answer against blunt-vulnerable targets. The base Burgess supports ammo types including Basic, Dragon Breath, Flechette, Penny Shot, and Slugs, with penny shot extending the tube to 6+1/9.

The Bulletgrubber synergy

The Burgess can be equipped with the Bulletgrubber trait to recover ejected live shells. For a tube-fed shotgun whose long reload is its weakness, that recovery is the practical upside worth noting — it partially offsets the reload tax that long equip animations already impose.

How to place it (no invented verdict)

We are not going to call the Burgess “the new meta” or rank it against the Romero or Sprint Drilling, because weapon performance shifts with balance patches and we will not guess numbers Crytek has not published in a form we can cite. What we can say: it is a 6-round, slow-handling shotgun with a melee-focused variant line, arriving as Blood Testament Battle Pass content that later enters normal progression (see the Blood Testament overview). If you like tube-fed shotguns and melee hybrids, the Trauma variant is the interesting one; if you prioritize fast handling, the long animations are a real cost.

Context for your kit

The Burgess joins a sandbox that 2.9 also reshaped through the balance changes — slug ammo got cheaper across several weapons, which matters more for your overall kit economy than any single gun. Build around roles, not hype.
