Gravios Hunt Guide: Break the Armor, Then the Head

Gravios is a walking wall until its shell breaks. Where the soft parts are, how to survive sleep gas and the heat beam, and why Fire fails.

Gravios is the fight that punishes bad target selection. Its shell is genuinely armored, your attacks bounce or do nothing on most of its body, and hunters who keep swinging at whatever is closest spend twenty minutes learning nothing. The hunt is a two-phase problem: break the armor, then punish what is underneath.

The armor phase

Until the shell breaks, most of Gravios is a bad target. Head, back and tail become viable damage points once the armor is off those parts, which means your early damage should be aimed at cracking specific sections rather than maximizing numbers.

Elements that work are Dragon, Ice and Water. Fire is what it resists, so a Fire build is actively bad here — this is one of the fights where element choice decides whether the hunt feels long.

The part under the shell

The underside is the soft spot and it is accessible more often than players realise, especially when Gravios is committed to a beam or a roll. Getting under it and hitting the belly is the reliable damage plan while the shell is still intact.

Sleep gas and the beam

The sleep gas is the mechanic that ends hunts, because a sleeping hunter next to an angry Gravios is a cart. Bring something to wake yourself or a teammate, and do not stand in the cloud to keep attacking.

The heat beam is slow to fire and covers a line rather than an area, so the counter is a sidestep, not a roll backwards. Rolling backwards keeps you in the beam’s path.

Gear notes

Guard skills work well — much of Gravios is blockable, and a shield weapon turns a scary fight into a manageable one. Earplugs help with the roar sequences. If you are bouncing constantly, that is information: you are hitting the wrong part, not failing a damage check.

Weapons that fit

Shelling weapons ignore hitzones, which makes the Gunlance unusually good here. Ranged weapons can target the head without standing in the gas. Blademasters with poor reach will spend the armor phase frustrated, and that is a real matchup issue rather than a skill issue.

Confirm the elements on the weakness chart, read weakness hitzones to understand why you are bouncing, and see armor skills for a guard-oriented setup.
