Uth Duna Hunt Guide: Strip the Water Fins First
Uth Duna wears a shell of water and mucus that has to come off. How the watery fins work, why the mouth is the target, and why Thunder wins.
Uth Duna looks like a water monster and fights like an armored one. Its head, back, forelimbs and tail carry translucent fins built from water and mucous secretions strung along tentacles — and those fins are armour. Until they are gone, you are hitting a shield.
The fin mechanic
The fins are not decoration. They extend its effective size, they change the profile of its attacks, and they absorb punishment that would otherwise go into the body. Damage them enough and the tentacles retract, the fins collapse, and Uth Duna becomes visibly sleeker and much less protected.
That gives the fight a structure: spend the first phase stripping fins, then take the real damage window.
Target and element
Every hit lands best on the mouth. Thunder is the element that works, which is counter-intuitive for a monster that lives in water — and it is exactly the kind of assumption that ruins a build. Water is resisted, so a Water weapon is the worst possible choice here.
What the fins do to your positioning
Because the fins extend the body’s silhouette, its attack coverage is wider than the visible torso suggests. Hunters get clipped by attacks that looked like they would miss. Until the fins are down, assume everything is bigger than it looks.
The fight after the fins
Once the fins retract, the monster is smaller, more mobile, and far more exposed. That is when the mouth is genuinely reachable and when most of the hunt’s damage happens. Do not waste that phase backing off because the fight suddenly looks different.
Gear notes
Thunder on the weapon, and mobility over defence — the danger here is coverage rather than a single big hit. If you are using a Fire or Water build because of the environment, that is the build error this fight punishes.
