Melee matters more in Space Marine 2 than in most shooters because Bulwark and Assault have no ranged primary — their melee weapon is their main damage tool. Pick by class, not just by tier.

Thunder Hammer — S-tier heavy impact

The Thunder Hammer is the hardest-hitting melee weapon and the best horde-clear option, especially for Assault: it carries the highest Cleaving Potential rating of any melee family, and its Ground Pound and Aftershock swings hit everything around you — even enemies at your back. Bulwark can also use it, but equipping it removes the Storm Shield, turning the class into an offensive build. The Lord Executioner’s Axe is the Heroic Thunder Hammer reward.

Chainsword — the safe first pick

The Chainsword is the most reliable melee family and the easiest to learn. The White Scars Chainsword Heroic stacks Adrenaline Surge up to three times (the final stack lasts nearly double), making it the best version for Vanguard, Assault, and Bulwark.

Power Sword — best for Bulwark

Power Sword is the cleanest shield-compatible Bulwark melee weapon and works in a Fencing profile for parry-focused play. The Salamanders Power Sword Heroic (Patch 14) adds “Nocturne’s Retort,” storing empower stacks on perfect parries for a big light-attack damage bonus.

Power Axe — heavier all-rounder

Power Axe has the broadest class access (Assault, Vanguard, Bulwark, Techmarine) and trades some speed for heavier swings and lane pressure. It is not strictly better than Chainsword or Power Sword, but it is a good single feel to carry across several classes.

Combat Knife — fastest, Vanguard favorite

The Combat Knife is the fastest melee option and excels at dueling specialists. The Argent Edge Heroic is notable because every parry staggers the enemy, which is a defensive life-saver against frame-trap-heavy opponents.

Power Fist and Omnissian Axe

Power Fist is a deliberate close-range brawler for Assault and Bulwark (the Deathwatch Power Fist is its Heroic). Omnissian Axe is the Techmarine-only path, built around area control while your tools do the work.

Profiles: Fencing, Balanced, Block

Melee defense profiles change how safe a weapon feels more than the family name. Fencing is the easiest for parry play — its perfect-parry window starts from the first animation frame. Balanced keeps parry available but asks for cleaner timing. Block (reworked around Perfect Block and Adrenaline Surge) is a different route from a Fencing parry.

Pair this with the best weapons overview and the class guides for Assault and Bulwark.
