Space Marine 2 Bolters: The Default That Wins Missions

Bolters are the baseline weapon and the most flexible. Why the plain choice is usually the right one.

The weapon everything is measured against

A bolter is a mid-range automatic weapon with a large magazine and enough punch for most enemies. It is not the best at anything and it is good at almost everything. That versatility is why most players should use one: the specialist weapons are better in their niche and worse everywhere else.

Rate of fire beats damage in a swarm

Against Tyranid swarms, the ability to keep shooting matters more than per-shot damage. A bolter that never stops is worth more than a heavier weapon that pauses to reload while the swarm closes. Trigger discipline still matters. Short bursts keep the weapon accurate and keep ammunition in reserve.

Against armour, aim

Bolters struggle with the heaviest armour. The answer is not more ammunition, it is aim: the weak points on armoured enemies are there for exactly this reason. A bolter aimed at a weak point kills faster than a specialist weapon aimed at a plate.

Variants and what changes

Different bolter patterns trade rate of fire, accuracy, and magazine size. The differences matter less than the player’s consistency, which is why switching constantly is usually a downgrade. Pick one, learn its recoil, and stop changing.

Ammunition

Bolter ammunition is the most common in the game, which is a real advantage in long Operations where resupply is limited. A specialist weapon with scarce ammunition is a weapon you stop using halfway through a mission.

When to switch away

When the mission is close-quarters and armoured, or when the squad already has enough general-purpose fire and needs a specialist answer. Those are the two cases. Otherwise, the bolter is the correct choice and the interesting decisions are elsewhere.

Consistency is the actual advantage

The strongest bolter player is not the one with the best variant, it is the one who has fired the same weapon for forty hours and knows exactly where the reticle sits after each burst. Switching weapons resets that knowledge, which is why the plainest choice often produces the best results.
