Space Marine 2 Heavy Class: The Gun That Never Stops
The Heavy trades mobility for sustained fire. Where to stand, when to brace, and why overheating is a positioning problem.
The class is a turret with legs
The Heavy carries the biggest guns in the game and cannot dodge like the other classes. That trade defines everything: you are the squad’s damage output and the squad’s least mobile member. Playing the class well means choosing ground before the fight rather than during it.
Bracing changes the weapon
Heavy weapons behave differently when braced. Bracing stabilises the weapon and improves accuracy and control, at the cost of being stationary. That single mechanic is the class: find a position where standing still is safe, brace, and delete things. Find yourself in the open and the same weapon is unwieldy and slow.
Heat management
Sustained fire builds heat and overheating locks you out of firing for a moment. In a fight against a swarm, that moment is when the swarm arrives. The skill is firing in bursts long enough to kill and short enough to never overheat, rather than holding the trigger until the weapon shuts down.
Positioning
Heavy wants elevation and a wall behind it. Elevation gives sightlines over the melee, and a wall removes one approach. The failure case is [being flanked](/guides/space-marine-2-team-comps/), because the class has no good answer to something arriving from an angle it is not facing.
Which weapon for which fight
Heavy bolters handle swarms and sustained pressure. Melta patterns handle armour at close range. Plasma trades rate of fire for burst damage on hard targets. Choosing the wrong one for the mission means fighting the mission with a tool that does not fit, which matters more on the class than on any other.
Squad relationship
The Heavy needs someone to hold the front line while it fires. In return it clears the things that would otherwise reach the melee classes. That makes the class a support weapon in the literal sense: it is at its best when the squad plays around it rather than when it tries to lead.
