An enemy that is not there

The Poltergeist is invisible for most of the fight and attacks by throwing objects. You will see crates, tools, and debris lift and launch before you ever see the creature. That makes it the most frustrating enemy in the game for anyone who plays by aiming at what they can see, because there is nothing to aim at for most of the encounter.

Locating it

The telekinetic activity reveals position: the objects it lifts come from near where it is, and the disturbance moves with it. Watch for the pattern rather than the individual object. Some detection tools and effects reveal it more directly, which makes it an enemy that rewards preparation rather than reaction.

What to shoot

When it becomes briefly vulnerable or partially visible, that is the window. Sustained fire during the window is worth more than a dozen speculative shots. Shotguns are effective when the encounter happens in a room, because the spread compensates for the poor visibility. Rifles are effective at distance where the disturbance is easier to track.

The damage is not the danger

The thrown objects hurt, but the real cost is the disruption: you get knocked around, lose your aim, and burn healing items. The fight is a resource drain more than a threat. That means the correct approach is to end it fast rather than to fight carefully. Long, cautious engagements against a Poltergeist are how you run out of medkits.

Where they appear

Buildings, underground areas, and abandoned structures. Anywhere with loose objects. That makes them an interior enemy, which is why the encounter is usually a surprise.

Avoiding them

They are tied to locations rather than wandering. Once you know which building has one, you can choose to skip it, and skipping is often the better economic decision.
