Stalker 2 Rodents: The Swarm That Bleeds You

Rat swarms are not a threat individually and lethal in numbers. Why the correct answer is distance and fire discipline.

The definition of a swarm enemy

Individual rodents do almost nothing. A pack of them does everything, because each one that reaches you applies damage and the cumulative effect drains health fast. The design intent is to punish standing still and punish slow weapons. Both of those are things players do naturally.

Fire discipline

The instinct is to spray into the pack. That empties a magazine and leaves you reloading while the survivors arrive. Short bursts aimed at the front of the pack are more efficient, because the front is what reaches you first and the rear takes time to close.

Distance is the answer

Backing away while firing is the correct technique. Swarms do not outrun a walking retreat, and every metre buys another burst. Climbing is better where available: a ladder or a ledge removes the entire encounter, and there is no shame in it.

Weapons that work

Anything with a high rate of fire or a wide spread. A shotgun at close range clears a pack efficiently; a submachine gun with controlled bursts does the same at slightly longer range. A single-shot rifle is the worst possible choice, because the pack closes during the reload.

The wound problem

Even a cleared swarm often means bleeding and lost health, and healing items are the real cost. That makes avoidance worth considering: a swarm in a side building is not worth the medkit.

Where they appear

Cellars, tunnels, and abandoned buildings. Anywhere enclosed with a lot of floor space, which is also where the loot is. That is the tension: the swarm is usually guarding something worth having, which is why the encounter happens at all.

The loot calculation

Before entering a cellar with a swarm, estimate what is inside. A few crates of common supplies is not worth a medkit and two magazines. The encounters worth taking are the ones with a container type you actually need, and skipping the rest is not cowardice, it is bookkeeping.
