Destiny 2 Yearning Echo Armor: How to Get and Farm It

Which Grasp of Avarice encounters drop which Yearning Echo slots, why four of five pieces is enough, and when Master is the only Tier 5 source.

Yearning Echo armor drops from one activity and nowhere else: Grasp of Avarice. Nothing about the farm is hidden, but two rules decide whether a week of runs is worth it — which encounter you are farming, and whether the dungeon is featured on the Director this week.

The pack gate comes first

Grasp of Avarice is the three-player dungeon that shipped on 7 December 2021 with the Bungie 30th Anniversary Pack. It is not one of the free rotating dungeons, so the pack is a hard requirement before any of this applies. Launch it from the Cosmodrome node.

If you do not own the pack, no amount of farming gets you the set. The armor set bonuses guide lists what else is worth chasing from activities you can already reach.

Which encounters pay out which slots

Armor drops are per class and are not locked to a single encounter, which is why “farm the boss” advice falls short. Two encounters do most of the work:

  • Phry’zhia favours Matador 64 alongside armor drops, so a run built around it doubles as a shotgun farm.
  • Avarokk fills in the remaining armor slots.

Because no encounter guarantees a specific slot, expect duplicates before the set completes. Four of five pieces is the real finish line, not five.

The gear tier rule that decides your week

What a clear pays out depends on the rotator, not on your effort. Bungie’s current rules:

Dungeon stateDifficultyGear tier
FeaturedStandardTier 5
FeaturedMasterTier 5
Non-featuredStandardTier 3
Non-featuredMasterTier 5

Read the last two rows carefully. On a week when Grasp of Avarice is not featured, standard gives Tier 3, but Master still gives Tier 5. That makes Master the only dependable source outside featured weeks, and it is the single most useful line for planning.

The featured dungeon week page explains how the rotator resets, and farming gear fast covers the runs that pay best per hour.

Why four pieces, not five

Both bonuses need piece counts, not a full set: two pieces for Untold Greed, four for Overflowing Coffers. Once you have four, the fifth slot belongs to an Exotic, which is almost always the stronger build. Stopping at five pieces to “complete” the set costs you the Exotic slot for no bonus gain.

A two-piece split is also legitimate. Two pieces of Yearning Echo plus two pieces of a second set gives you two first-tier bonuses at once, and Untold Greed is unaffected by the four-piece Crucible lockout covered on the main Yearning Echo page.

Running the dungeon itself

The mechanics are on the Grasp of Avarice guide, including the route and the encounter pacing. If you want the wider dungeon list for comparison, the dungeon guide covers which ones rotate and which pay armor.
